The llaüt is a typical wooden boat from the lower part of the Ebro River that was used for transporting goods. The history of Fayón is closely linked to this type of vessel, which was used to carry coal extracted from the mines located between this municipality and Mequinenza and transport it to the train station or to the final part of the Ebro, in the area of Tortosa and Amposta.

These vessels operated by sail and oar and could carry up to 40 tons. They sailed downstream loaded with coal and, often, the return journey was used to bring products from the lower part of the river, such as rice. The upstream journey was usually more laborious, as the current was against them. If the wind wasn’t favorable, they used the so-called “towpaths”, which were paths built along the riverbanks where people or animals (donkeys, mules, bulls, or draft horses) pulled the boat using a rope.

In Fayón, one of the legendary llaüts of the area has been restored: the Cardenal. Additionally, they have also invested in purchasing two motorized boats to allow tourists to explore the areas where the old llaüts once sailed.

How can I enjoy it?

If you want to enjoy the Matarraña River and the Ebro River, guided excursions with llaüt are offered every Sunday between March and November (variable season) with two departures at 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM from La Reixaga pier and from Port Massaluca Camping pier.

1 – TRIP WITH TICKET: Each tourist buys a ticket for the guided route with the llaüt. The ticket is paid on the day of the activity, but it is necessary to book HERE. The price for adults is €9, children under 12 years old €5, and children under 3 years old are free.

Duration and route:

The visit lasts approximately 1 hour.

The route is as follows: Pier – Old railway tunnel – Matarraña River mouth – Old cemetery – Station Houses – Bell tower – Pier.

2 – CUSTOMIZED SCHEDULED TRIP: This is the trip where the tourist rents the use of the llaüt, with the captain and guide included. The maximum capacity of the llaüt is 22 people. The route and format can be customized, but if the usual route is taken, the trip price will be a fixed price of €250, and in case of fewer than 12 people, €200. It must be booked in advance, and if a different route is desired, a customized quote will be prepared.

(*) There is the possibility of guided tours with a stop at the Castle. They have an additional cost and require advance booking.
